Neurosurgeons are trained in brain surgery and spine surgery. We perform brain surgery to remove tumors and blood clots from the brain, and manage brain injuries. We also fix spinal injuries. We manage spinal problems involving the neck and low back from disk herniations, and pinched nerves. We also fix other nerve entrapment problems in the arms and hands such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
Advances in Neurosurgery
We are proud of our leadership role in the field of minimally invasive spine and brain surgery. We are able to perform operations through small incisions operating through small tubes under the operating microscope. Advances in surgical technique have made it possible to perform a number of spine surgeries in an outpatient center. This pioneer work in minimally invasive surgery reduces the stay in the hospital, and helps patients recover more quickly and with less pain.
Minimally Invasive Brain Surgery
The operating microscope and neuronavigational computer equipment allow neurosurgeons to remove a brain tumor through a small openin directly over the tumor. It's remarkable to see patients walk out of the hospital a day or two after brain surgery.
Minimally Invasive Back Surgery
Advances in minimally invasive surgery have made possible to do a number of spinal surgeries as outpatient procedures. We use imaging equipment in the operating room to direct a small tube to a precise location in the spine. The patient goes home the same day with a wound small enough to be covered with a band-aid.
Alternatives to Surgery
There are a number of patients with severe and incapacitating pain involving the neck or back, who haven't been responding to medical management, but may not be candidates for surgical treatment. Other patients who are considering surgery may want a further trial of medical treatment and want to explore alternatives to surgery. Our physiatrist, Dr. George Raj, is an expert in Pain Intervention Procedures. He specializes in the medical management of spinal problems and pain, offering a wide range of nonsurgical treatment options.
